- BERLIN, March 7. (AP) The postwar Republican colors of Germany ceased to exist today and the constitutional provision concerning them became a dead letter.
The hoisting of the former Imperial flag over the Berlin city hall for the first time since 1918 symbolized what has happened throughout the Retch. Many public buildings controlled by Chancellor Adolf Hitler's National Socialist, such a the official residence of the minister-without-portfolio, Hermann Goering, displayed the Nazi swastika emblem. In many localities both the imperial flag and the swastika were shown, while the colors of the republic were taboo.
Three Americans complained at the American embassy that they had been mistreated by National Socialist police wearing uniforms.
Nathaniel Wolff, of Rochester, N. Y., said he had been beaten and taken to an apartment where he was held prisoner until a Nazi leader appeared and ordered his release. He asserted he had been forced to sign a statement absolving the Nazis and that he was ordered to leave Germany, whereupon he went to France.
Henry Battler of New York city and Edwin Dakin of Hannibal. Mo., complained that armed Nazis forced their way into their apartments and demanded explanation of their "anti-Nazi attitudes." United States Ambassador Frederic M. Sackett said the embassy was taking every precaution to protect Americans.
As a result, of the Nazi-Nationalist victory in Sunday's reichstag elections the job of sweeping out all vestiges of former regime waa carried on all down the Iine.
Th Anhalt provincial diet voted that no member of the socialist party must hold a civil service job. In Bremen and Hessen the police were taken from the Socialist police presidents and turned over to Nationalists. The Prussian ministry of interior barred nude culture societies, against which the Nationalists and Nazis have inveighed.
Military pomp and solemn speeches by General Karl Litzmann, the senior member, and by Chancellor Hitler will mark the opening of the reichstag in the Potsdam garrison church sometime between April 3 and April 8.
Beyond the formal opening, no business will be transacted at the initial session. Later meetings probably will be held at the state-owned Kroll opera house, across he square from the reichstag building, until repairs to the reichstag, which was burned last week, hava been completed. - History Unfolded Contributor
