session of the south bank southeast of Kalinin."

The Germans in this sector were pushed out of several villages in a counter-drive that was designed to relieve the grave threat to Moscow caused by an enemy drive into the Klin area. There were indications that the Russian counterattacks might have trapped a large Axis column that drove into Klin.

"On another sector," the official Russian agency Tass continued, "stubborn enemy resistance was overwhelmed and the Red Army continues to advance slowly, occupying the villages L, B and I.

"Thereafter the Red Army captpred[sic] a strongly fortified center at K and dug in, repulsing all enemy efforts to dislodge them.

"Nazis Slowly Retreating"
"The enemy is slowly retreating in a number of places, fighting rear guard actions."

Previously, a Paris radio report had claimed the Germans were only 21 miles from Moscow

Another unconfirmed claim of the Paris radio was that a German from Klin, about 40 miles northwest of Moscow, had won a bridgehead across the Moscow-Volga canal.

The Moscow-Volga canal runs almost due from Moscow and an advance to that point from Klin would represent an advance of about 30 miles. Russian reports admit that the Nazis are driving east from Klin under powerful impetus provided by three divisions—one of infantry, one of tanks and one mechanized.

Situation Very Serious'
Radio Moscow quoted Pravda that the situation around Moscow "remains very serious and tense."

Pravda estimated that Germans had thrown 49 divisions—possibly 735,000 men—into the fight and admitted that the Germans were moving ahead on the Klin salient despite severe losses.

The Germans were said to be aided by dry weather and temperatures not too cold, enabling tanks, artillery and even motorcycles to move quickly through forests and over fields.

A large tank force was said to have approached Klin, but a Soviet tank brigade stemmed the attack, destroying 70 German tanks and killing 2000 men, Radio Moscow said. In the Volokolamsk infantry force sector a heavy German infantry force and 40 tanks were thrown back across, a river while Russian guards regiments stemmed a Nazi advance on the Moscow-Leningrad railroad.

Nazis Not Stopped Yet
Radio Moscow gave no confirmation of the Paris reports. Reports of this Nazi radio station, it has been noted, frequently are exaggerated. However, Radio Moscow made no secret of the fact that the offensive against the capital was not stopped and that the flanking wings of the great Nazi pincers continued to move on despite fierce resistance.

A strong counter-attack in the Kalinin sector recaptured seven localities and drove the Germans back with losses. This, it seemed obvious, was designed to relieve the intense Nazi pressure on the northern Moscow salients.

The Russian reports said the Germans, after several days' lull, had opened up on the Maloyaroslavets salient again, attempting to get an offensive underway. This action started Thursday. Russian artillery fire beat it off. After a bombardment of Soviet positions, the attack was launched again yesterday. Fighting went on through the day and last night. The Soviet lines held.

Nazis Capture Town
The attack along Volokolamsk angle was continuing and resulted in the capture of the town of "I." The Russians said it had been slowed. Nevertheless, the Russians had to retire before superior German tank forces. They were said to be fighting for every house in villages and towns in order to make the Nazi advance as costly as possible.

Radio Moscow reported that the "danger to Sevastopol," the great Russian Black Sea naval base, was growing. This report might indicate that the Soviets were preparing to yield it.

"The enemy continues, to bring up fresh forces," said Radio Moscow, "continuously attempting to capture the dominating heights at the approaches to the city, throwing Alpine units into battle and storming the heights regardless of heavy losses.

"The Red army and Black Sea fleet are stubbornly defending their positions, with the aid of great assistance from Soviet planes.

52,000 Massacre Reported
A report to the army newspaper, Red Star, from the southwest front, said the Germans massacred 52,000 men, women and children within a few days in Kiev, the Ukraine capital. Attributed to Russians who have escaped from Kiev, it said the Germans were systematically wiping out all Ukrainians and Russians who have demonstrated loyalty to the Soviet government in any manner.

"The Germans have started a house-to-house search," said the report. "They are taking anything of any value. All the pretty women are taken to brothels. Those who refused to submit or resisted, were shot. There are many suicides."

A spokesman reported that German attacks on the Moscow sector show no sign of abatement and that the Germans appear to have gained a little ground east of Tula.

Russians Attack In South
North of Moscow, the spokesman believed, there have been no more Nazi gains. He said additional reports have been received of a heavy Soviet counter-attack on the Rostov front, but said the results are not yet, known.

The Soviet morning communique, broadcast by Radio Moscow, said Soviet forces engaged the enemy on all forces engaged the enemy on all fronts during the night. It reported that 89 German tanks, 410 trucks loaded with infantry ammunition and 11 fuel trucks were destroyed. Some 2000 Germans were reported killed. Units led by Commander Zelensky were credited with wiping out four tanks, 11 armored cars and 3000 Germans.
