- MOSCOW, March 28—No fewer than 50,000 Russians and Ukrainians were killed by German occupants of Kiev, according to information in the possession of a newspaper office here considered reliable.
The pogroms, against Jews, with whom were classed all known Communist activists and officials of the Soviet regime, many accused of nothing more than being Russian, were worse than anything known before in the old Ukrainian capital, whose civil-war history was bloody enough—the city changing hands 15 times, on one occasion thrice in a single day.
Many of these machine-gun murders occurred In Lukyandskaya Cemetery, where the victims first were made to dig their own graves after visiting the dread local Gestapo Headquarters.
Many of Kiev's inhabitants now are filtering through German control into the countryside and joining up with partisans. Now that spring is approaching and news of Red Army successes in the eastern Ukraine is becoming known through leaflets secretly handed around, this flight from the city is intensifying—a fact noted about Kharkov and elsewhere.
One such fugitive from Kiev said an attempt to enforce mobilization for work between the ages of 18 and 55 had failed, with only a few thousands collected, the rest hiding or escaping. As a result, German soldiers were employed.
There is great reluctance to work on fortifications which would postpone the day of liberation. - History Unfolded Contributor
