Aufbau

New York, NY

Description: Aufbau began publication in December 1934 as a newsletter for the German-Jewish Club of New York. By then the club was ten years old and its membership was steadily increasing. In the beginning, the newspaper contained mostly news about club activities, articles about Jewish culture and contemporary events, and helpful facts for Jewish refugees. Overtime, its articles focused more and more on international events and especially the treatment of Jews in Germany. Aufbau became one of the leading anti-Nazi publications of the German press in exile. Many well-known personalities wrote for the publication, including Hannah Arendt, Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, and Stefan Zweig. From September 1, 1944 through September 27, 1946, the Aufbau printed numerous lists of Jewish Holocaust survivors located in Europe, as well as a few lists of victims.

The Forward (Forverts)

New York, NY

Description: Founded in 1897 as a Yiddish-language daily, the Forward soon became a national paper, the most widely read Jewish newspaper anywhere. By the 1920s its circulation outstripped the New York Times, and by 1930, the Forward had become one of the largest Jewish newspapers in the world. It was published daily during the years 1933-1945, at which time its circulation fluctuated between 170,000 and close to 300,000. Local editions of the newspapers were printed in Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Baltimore. At its peak, the newspaper had writers and contributors all over the Jewish World, writing on Jewish and non-Jewish topics. The Forward began publishing a weekly English edition in 1990, and remains in circulation today.
