- An authoritative report of the atrocities committed by German government officials at the largest concentration camp in occupied Poland, at Oswiecim, has arrived here. It states that during the year ending last July, 94,000 Poles were killed in its torture-chambers or died of starvation and overwork.
Smuggled out of the country by Polish patriots, the report is written in narrative, eye-witness style. In Poland itself, thousands of copies of the report were published in pamphlet form under the title, Oboz Smierci (Camp of Death), by the highly organized underground press.
The barracks of Oswiecism, located in southwestern Poland near the German border, are kept full by manhunts in the streets of Warsaw —Wola, Mokotow, Zoliborz. The future camp "colonists" are piled into trucks. There is never a chance to notify a wife or a mother of what has happened.
The German slavers seek out young, healthy-looking Poles for Oswiecim. After several days of imprisonment in Warsaw Gestapo buildings, the slaves are driven to a railroad station where they are jammed into locked cattle cars.
The train is 50 cars long, each one jammed body to body with 100 to 120 people. There is no air except the foul smell of human excrement which chokes. There is no place to sit down, cattle don't need benches. There is nothing to lean against. There is no water, no food. All sense of passing time is lost.
